Basketball scouting. Example of how to help our team

If in the previous post I pointed out that, for me, own basketball scouting is just as important, if not more, than scouting the opponent, in this new post I show an example of own scouting of the team I am coaching this season.

As can be seen in the video, I analyse, through basketball scouting, two offences and one defence of our team in terms of different technical-tactical aspects and attitude.

Reading of the defence known as "push" against a direct screen

Our screener reads that her defender is going to "push" her and positions herself with her back turned to avoid being an easy target, acting as a kind of screen. This detail, combined with the fact that the defender of the player with the ball goes under the screen, creates a space that our point guard uses to "punish" with a three-pointer.

After scoring the basket, the players have the mission to press full court, setting "traps" on the sidelines.

As I point out in the video, our number 3 makes a great effort with her foot and hand activity when the opposing player crosses the three-point line. The serious mistake is made by number 17, who abandons the trap at the very moment when she should be more aggressive, since the ball handler has already picked up her dribble.

Defensive activity of our team

As the play continues, we observe that the defensive activity of our team is quite correct, forcing a poor shot and securing the rebound afterwards. One aspect to improve is greater aggressiveness in the trap when the opposing player with the ball is located at the extension of the free-throw line, close to the sideline (0:26).

In our second possession shown in the video, we can see how the same player acts again as the screener but does not adopt a good body position.
She should position herself with a lower centre of gravity and a wider stance at the moment of setting the screen. The ball handler, unable to make the pass to the roller, executes the technical movement of protecting the ball and passing with the outside hand to the player positioned at 45º to create a triangle with the inside player.

Taking advantage of the isolation that is created

The player did not occupy the ball-side low post, creating an isolation opportunity that the attacker uses to drive baseline in a 1-on-1 situation. The team then fills the paint, and as the defence collapses, another attacker cuts from 45º, getting behind the defenders to receive the pass and score.
